Ziguinchor: Signature of a local pact to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

The Sustainable Development Goals address the global challenges facing African communities, including those related to well-being, poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, peace and justice.

To achieve these goals, it is necessary to put in place an organisational framework and reforms both nationally and internationally, in order to promote faster growth, improve equity and equality of opportunity; and determine environmental sustainability.

MDG 5 is about gender equality, which is not only a fundamental human right, but also a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.

Progress has been made in recent decades. More girls are in school, fewer girls are forced into early marriages, more women are in parliaments and leadership positions, and laws are being reformed but not enforced to advance gender equality.

Despite these advances, many challenges remain: discriminatory laws and social norms are still pervasive; women are still under-represented at all levels of decision-making.

To give a new impetus to the achievement of the MDGs, Senegal has aligned its multi-decade plan "PSE" with the objectives. However, in view of the 14 other remaining SDGs and despite the government's political commitment, the challenges remain considerable, which is why the commitment of all actors, including ENDA Santé, is necessary.

At the end of two days of dialogue, the community actors of Ziguinchor and the local authorities agreed on several points on which they will have to commit themselves through a pact.

The signatory parties are committed to contributing to:

  • End all forms of discrimination against women and girls and empower women and girls;
  • Eliminate all harmful practices (child marriage, forced marriage and genital mutilation, etc.);
  • Eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls;
  • Promote access to quality sexual and reproductive health information and services for all.
