Fight against malnutrition: Delivery of materials to 19 children's granaries in the health district of Popenguine

The coronavirus increases the economic vulnerability of rural populations, putting children at greater risk of malnutrition. Between September and October 2020, the Wer werlé project, implemented by ENDA Santé with funding from Horizont 3000, set up nineteen new child granaries in Popenguine.

In partnership with the Popenguine health district, these granaries are in addition to the eight already set up in this area to cover all health posts and huts. In each village, management committees have been created and given a set of cooking equipment to organise cooking demonstrations. During these meetings, which are now held in strict compliance with the barrier measures against the coronavirus, the mothers collect foodstuffs which will be used to prepare meals for the children under the supervision of the community relays and health staff.

These are sessions to encourage people to learn about nutrition education, food hygiene and daily behaviour towards children in order to better manage malnutrition in children under five. To strengthen community solidarity and ensure the sustainability of the cooking demonstrations, the project team insisted on the importance of using local dishes and the involvement of community leaders to facilitate the collection.

The attics installed in 2019 that had already received their equipment were also visited and received an additional bucket with a tap to facilitate hand washing and to comply with the barrier measures against covid19.
