ENDA Santé: medical consultation and circumcision campaign for Talibé children in the Daaras of Saint-Louis

During the year 2022, ENDA Santé organized medical consultation campaigns followed by circumcision for children. These campaigns have mainly targeted the Talibés, from the Daaras of Saint-Louis. An opportunity for the NGO and its partners (Red Cross and the regional hospital of Saint-Louis) through the SantéCom project, financed by BP and its partners Kosmos Energie and Petrosen to contribute to the improvement of the socio-sanitary conditions of children in families and in the Daaras of the project's intervention areas.

Quranic education is widespread in Saint-Louis. Children learn the Quran in Daaras, which most often appear as makeshift shelters where hygiene conditions are quite poor. This situation exposes them to diseases.

The medical consultation and circumcision campaigns initiated by ENDA Santé thus respond to a request from Koranic masters. The Serignes Daaras visited by our teams in the framework of this campaign salute "this beautiful initiative" and wish that these actions dedicated to prevention, circumcision and medical care be extended and perpetuated. Faithful to the commitments of the Organization, our teams have continued the actions throughout phase 4 of the project to meet the demand of the Serignes to ensure better health for Talibé children.

300 Talibés consulted and 179 circumcised at the end of the 3 medical consultation campaigns

Satisfactory results were achieved after 3 campaigns. 300 were consulted and 179 Talibé children, aged between 7 and 17, were circumcised. The good news is that the children were given a medical consultation before being circumcised. Those who are unable to undergo this operation due to illness are taken care of by the regional hospital of Saint-Louis, with the support of ENDA Santé.

ENDA Santé has been accompanying and supporting us in this circumcision activity for almost 5 years. And we do it in partnership with the Urology and Emergency Departments of the regional hospital of Saint-Louis. As you know, circumcision is a surgical act. There is no such thing as zero risk. It is always necessary to have a urologist on hand.

These events are important moments for all those who believe that mutual aid and solidarity are essential values for our society, but they also demonstrate our action towards vulnerable people, especially children from disadvantaged families.

The parents of the Talibés live far from here (they come from Fouta and Kaolack). And sometimes when we ask them for money, it can take a long time, so I tried with the little means I had, to circumcise them. Because when they reach a certain age, they can't wait any longer. I have 8 Talibés who benefited from the last circumcision campaign initiated by ENDA Santé. I am very grateful.

These activities are part of the Santécom project, financed by BP and its partners Kosmos Energie and Petrosen and implemented in the Langue de Barbarie and Gandiol. The campaigns were organized at the Maison de la Gare, at the Sor Daga health post and at the ENDA Santé mobile clinic, especially in hard-to-reach areas, always in partnership with the Saint-Louis hospital.
