Organic Agriculture: Capacity building on organic market gardening in secondary schools

In the framework of the Wer Wërlé project, EndaSanté, with the support of EndaEnergie, trained about 30 people on organic market gardening at the Lycée de Saly on 29 and 30 May 2019. In total, 32 people benefited from the training, including students, teachers and the municipality of Mbour.

The objective of this training was to make students and supervisors aware of the dangers of using pesticides in agriculture while introducing them to good organic farming practices.  

The capacity building on organic market gardening, during which the students and their teachers showed great interest, was carried out in two stages: first a theoretical training through a participatory approach, and then a practical exercise on the basic techniques of organic farming.

During two days, several lessons were given on :

  • The dangers of using chemicals in agriculture
  • The notion of pesticides :
    • Pesticides and the environment
    • Pesticides and health 
  • The cultural itinerary: The different phases of growth and development of plants and the associated needs
  • Agricultural planning :
    • Preparing for the establishment of a culture
    • The choice of speculations
    • Sowing periods
    • Cleaning the ground
    • The reworking of the boards
    • The making of new boards
    • Transplanting
    • Nursery stocking of lettuce seeds
    • Preparation of treatment and fertilisation products
  • The notion of pesticides :
    • Pesticides and the environment
    • Pesticides and health 
  • The cultural route : 
    • The different phases of growth and development of plants 
    • Associated needs
  • Techniques for preparing organic fertilisers 
  • Manufacturing techniques for organic pest control products
